What's the Best Engine Oil for the BMW N55?

In my opinion, it’s more satisfying to do it yourself than to pay someone else! Plus, you learn a lot about your engine along the way.

Exactly! But how do you deal with some of the hidden costs, like tools you may not have?

A bit of humor: If I had a dollar for every time I forgot to put the drain plug back on, well, I’d have enough to pay someone else to do it! :joy:

For the BMW N55, oil change intervals are crucial. Typically, it’s recommended every 7,500 miles, but severe conditions might require changes sooner. What do you all think?

Absolutely! I usually change mine every 5,000 miles because I drive in city conditions frequently. It keeps my engine happy!

Great point about driving conditions, johnlopez. I’ve noticed that stop-and-go traffic really takes a toll, so I might consider changing mine more often too.

I’ve heard that using synthetic oil can extend intervals. Does anyone have experience with this? Would love to know more about the oil types that work best for the N55.

Using synthetic is a good call! I run Mobil 1 0W-40, and I notice great performance. I still stick to the 7,500-mile rule, though.

Change intervals are interesting. In my case, I’ve gone up to 10,000 miles with no issues, but I track everything meticulously. How do you all keep track of your intervals?

I use an app to log my oil changes and other maintenance. Helps keep everything organized! I also change it more often during summer due to heat. Anyone else do seasonal maintenance?

Seasonal maintenance! What a unique idea! I just change it based on mileage, but it’s worth considering other factors. How often you swap filters along with the oil?

I usually change the filter at every oil change. It’s not worth risking engine efficiency. What do you all say?

I use Mann filters for my N55. They seem reliable and I haven’t faced issues so far. Anyone else have different experiences?
