6.6 Duramax vs 6.7 Cummins: Which One Should I Choose?

I’ve owned both! The 6.7 Cummins is known for its reliability over time. Though, I had to replace the turbo on mine at around 100k miles. Still, overall I think it’s worth it.

What’s the average cost of maintaining each engine? I’ve heard some horror stories about repair costs for the Cummins.

Maintenance costs can be high for both, but I think the Duramax tends to have fewer major issues. The parts are generally cheaper!

From my experience with the 6.7 Cummins, the transmission issues can be tricky. It’s all about how the truck has been treated, though.

I also heard that the 6.6 Duramax has fewer electrical issues compared to the Cummins. Is that true? I’d love to hear more opinions.

Absolutely, Margaret! I’ve seen less electrical trouble with my Duramax versus friends’ Cummins. It’s comforting to have fewer headaches.

I’ve heard that both engines can last well over 300k miles with proper care. How do you guys feel about the resale value of each?

It seems like the Cummins typically holds value better, especially if it has a good service history.

I just love the sound of a good Cummins engine, though! Is that enough reason to choose them over a Duramax?

Haha, it’s a good reason! But let’s not forget about long-term costs. Sound may not help if you’re stuck paying repair bills!

Honestly, choosing between the two is tough. I feel like it really comes down to personal preference and how you plan to use the truck.

Is there a specific model year that you all prefer for either engine? I’ve read 2011 Duramax had some good reviews.

Yes, I would agree! The earlier Cummins models had their quirks too, but they were solid overall.

In the end, it’s all about what you value more – sound, reliability, or cost. Just keep an eye out for maintenance records!

I’ve had a Duramax for years and the aftermarket support is fantastic! Performance chips really unlock some extra power. It’s all about the right tuning though.

So true! I’ve installed a chip in my 6.7 Cummins, and the difference in torque is noticeable right away. Any recommendations on exhaust systems for the Duramax?

When it comes to exhaust systems, you can’t go wrong with a 5-inch turbo-back system for the Duramax. It really improves airflow and gives a nice sound, too!

That sounds appealing! Can you feel a noticeable difference in performance after installing it?

Absolutely! I gained about 30 extra horses after my exhaust install. I also paired it with a good tuner for best results. Really ties it all together.

What do you all think about the reliability of these engines when heavily modified? I hear mixed reviews.
