Looking for the Best Running Boards for My 2017 F150

I’m considering upgrading my 2017 Ford F-150 with some running boards. I’ve seen a few options online, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the brands and styles available.

What to Consider

Here are a few things I’ve been thinking about:

  • Materials: Should I go for aluminum, steel, or something else?
  • Style: Running boards vs. step bars, what do you think looks better?
  • Ease of Installation: How tough is it to install these things myself?

Questions:

  1. Has anyone here installed running boards on their 2017 F-150? What brand did you choose and why?
  2. Are there any specific models or brands you would recommend? Any that have left you disappointed?
  3. How much should I expect to spend on a decent set?

Pros and Cons

I’m also curious about the pros and cons of different running boards. For instance, are some more durable than others? Do some offer better grip in wet conditions?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to your thoughts!

Looking for running boards can be tricky! For my 2017 F150, I found a set from N-FAB to be pretty solid. They were easy to install with basic hand tools and came with all necessary hardware.

I’ve heard great things about N-FAB. Did you face any challenges during installation?

Installation was pretty smooth, but aligning the brackets took a bit of patience. If you’re having trouble, make sure you’re using a level to guide you! It really helps.

What kind of tools did you end up using for the installation?

I just needed basic hand tools: a socket wrench, screwdrivers, and some pliers. The instructions were super clear. Definitely worth taking your time with it!

I went with the AMP Research PowerStep, and honestly, they’re a game changer! Installation was actually kind of fun. The only hiccup was figuring out the wiring for the LED lights.

Those lights make a big difference. How did you solve the wiring issue?

I ended up watching a YouTube tutorial. They’re super helpful! Also, I recommend double-checking the connectors; mine were slightly mislabeled.

YouTube is a lifesaver! I had a headache trying to understand the written manual. Got any other tips?

Definitely! Just take your time and don’t rush. Also, keep all your tools organized; it saves you a lot of frustration when you need to find something quickly.

A good tip! I misplaced my socket wrench at one point and it was infuriating! Any other tools you’d recommend that I may not have?

Consider a ratcheting wrench! They really help in tight spots, especially under the F150.

Great advice! What about dealing with rust or old bolts during installation? That can be a real challenge if you’re not careful.

I had to soak mine in WD-40 for a few hours. It made a huge difference removing them!

WD-40 is the unsung hero of DIY projects! I’m wondering if anyone used a pro for the installation, and was it worth it?

I attempted it myself first, but ended up calling a pro afterward. They did it in an hour, while I spent half a day messing with it!

Haha! Sounds like you’re not alone there! But hey, at least you learned something. Anything you’d do differently next time?

I recently researched running boards for my 2017 F150 and came across the Westin Outlaw. They’re sturdy and have a great design, but installation can be a bit tricky. Anyone else have experience with them?

I installed the Westin bars last year! They look great, but I found the instructions vague. I ended up watching some YouTube tutorials to figure it out. Definitely worth it though!
