Anyone tried a SAI delete on a 1.8T? Need help!

Seeking Advice on SAI Delete for 1.8T Engines

I’ve been looking into performing a Secondary Air Injection (SAI) delete on my 1.8T engine and could really use some advice. I’ve heard that doing this could lead to better performance and potentially get rid of some pesky emissions codes that pop up every now and then. Here’s what I’m looking to understand:

What’s the Best Approach?

  • Software/Tools: Are there specific programs that can help with deleting the SAI? I’ve seen names like VCDS and other tuning software thrown around but I’m not sure which is best.
  • DIY vs. Professional: Is it something I can tackle myself if I have basic mechanical skills, or should I consider getting a professional to handle it?

Potential Caveats

  • Emissions Issues: I realize that removing emissions controls can lead to legal and environmental concerns. How do others manage this? Is it worth the risk?
  • Performance Gains: For those who have done the delete, did you notice a significant improvement in engine performance or responsiveness?

Additional Tips

  • Are there any aftermarket parts or modifications that pair well with an SAI delete?
  • Any wiring harness changes or additional steps I should keep in mind?

I really appreciate any insights, guides, or experiences you can share. Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to hearing from you all!

I’ve done a SAI delete on my 1.8T and can share some insights! You’ll need a basic set of tools like a socket set, and a vag-com cable for coding. Once you remove the SAI pump, make sure to have the proper resistors for the O2 sensors to avoid check engine lights.

That’s great information! Also, did you have to do any specific coding after the delete? I’m worried about the check engine light coming on.

You definitely need to code it after! It’s not super complicated. I used VCDS for that. Just go to the engine adaptation and disable the SAI function. It took me about 30 minutes.

I just used a cheap OBD-II scanner after my deletion, it worked perfectly fine! Who needs fancy software when a simple tool does the trick?

Thanks for the reassurance! Does anyone know if there are performance benefits after the delete?

Yes! I’ve seen a slight increase in throttle response. It was worth it for me. Also, weight reduction from removing the SAI pump helps too!

Anyone have tips for sealing up the exhaust ports after the delete? I don’t want any leaks!

I used some high-temperature gasket maker. Works like a charm! Just ensure you let it cure properly before firing up the engine.

Great tip! Do you think any specific brand of gasket maker is better than others?

I’ve had good luck with Permatex. Just follow the instructions carefully, and you should be good to go!

But, like, isn’t it a bit risky to delete the SAI? What if it affects emissions? Just saying… I don’t want any eco-warriors after me!

To each their own! It is a choice—some do it for performance while others may keep emissions in mind. Just be responsible about it!

I’ve heard of some people doing it just for fun. Like, isn’t there some joy in tearing apart a car just to see what happens? Haha!

True! Sometimes, it’s about the adventure and learning along the way. Remember, mechanics isn’t just a job—it’s a lifestyle!

I did a SAI delete on my 1.8T last summer. Overall, it was positive, but I ran into a few hiccups with codes popping up afterward. Make sure to have a good tuning solution ready!

When doing a SAI delete, always ensure to block off the hoses properly. I’m currently troubleshooting a vacuum leak, which might be related to mine. Any tips?

[quote=“kfletcher, post:3, topic:7078”]When doing a SAI delete, always ensure to block off the hoses properly…/quote] Vacuum leaks can definitely be tricky! I used rubber caps to block off the SAI ports, and it helped maintain my vacuum.

Also, it’s crucial to reset your ECU after the delete. I forgot to do it the first time, and my car ran rough for weeks!
