Thoughts on the Star Racing 3/4 Cam for Better Performance?

A tuning suggestion is great! Were there any specific tuning setups that worked better for you?

I went with a more aggressive map that suited my riding style. It took a few tries, but it was worth it! Just keep tweaking until it feels right.

By the way, did anyone face any unexpected challenges during installation? I always worry about that!

I had trouble with clearance under the cam cover. It’s tight in there! Just take your time and check everything twice.

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll make sure to take my time. Humor me: did you try to DIY anything else and broke it?

Oh, just my pride! I nearly stripped a bolt. Use thread locker; it helps keep things secure.

Hilarious! I always seem to have those moments too. Any advice on when to call it quits and get a pro to help?

If you hit a wall after a couple of hours, it might be best to consult a pro. Time is money, after all!

I hear you, Paul! It’s so easy to aim for DIY, but sometimes it saves more time to just hire an expert.

I’ve been using the Star Racing 3/4 cam for a few months now, and the torque improvement is noticeable. It offers a great balance between performance and reliability when compared to the Screamin’ Eagle options.

Nice to hear! I’ve tried the Andrews 37 cam, and while it performs well, I found it a bit rougher on idle compared to the Star cam. What do you think about the idle quality?

I agree with both of you! The Star Racing 3/4 cam really shines in mid-range power. In contrast, the Woods 555 has more top-end pull but sacrifices low-end torque, which can be frustrating in traffic.

I’ve not used the Star cam, but I am curious about how it performs in long-distance rides. Is it still comfortable after a few hours like some other cams?

From my experience, the Star Racing cam is pretty smooth even on long rides. I’ve clocked over 200 miles in a day without feeling fatigued, which was a concern I had switching from stock.

That’s great to know! The reliability of the Star cam also seems solid. I’ve heard some mixed reviews on longevity for other brands.

I had a buddy who switched to the Star cam and loved it! However, he said the powerband felt different. Can anyone elaborate on how it stacks up against the S&S cams?

I’ve used both the S&S and Star cams. The S&S has a more aggressive profile, which gives a bit more horsepower, but the Star cam is smoother and more forgiving in everyday ride scenarios. Definitely value for money!

Thank you! That’s super helpful. I’m leaning towards the Star cam for a good balance since I use my bike mostly for commuting.

On the topic of value, does anyone have thoughts on whether the performance upgrade is worth the price compared to just tuning the stock cam?

I think so. The performance difference with the Star cam is substantial. Plus, with the setup and tuning, I found the total cost still reasonable compared to aftermarket options that don’t deliver as much.
