I’ve had my 1980 Yamaha 850 Special for over a decade now. The riding experience is fantastic—smooth and responsive. The acceleration is solid, especially for a bike from that era. It’s fun to ride around town!

That’s great to hear! I love how the bike handles turns. It feels planted, and you can lean it over without worries. Have you made any modifications?

I’ve kept mine pretty stock, but I did change the exhaust for a deeper sound. Acceleration is noticeably better! Comparing it to my friend’s CB750 from the same era, I find the Yamaha more comfortable to ride for longer distances.

Interesting! I had a CB750 as well, and while it was powerful, the Yamaha feels more agile in the corners. How’s the reliability been for you?

Reliability has been excellent. I’ve only had minor issues, mostly cosmetic. The engine is a beast! I sometimes wonder how it compares to modern bikes, though. Do you all think it would hold its own today?

While it won’t compete with modern sport bikes, it definitely has character and can still give newer riders a run for their money on the roads.

I think nostalgia plays a huge role too; the sound and feel of these bikes is something modern machines lack. Does anyone else find themselves just looking at their Yamaha and smiling?

Absolutely! Sometimes I take mine out just to listen to that growling engine. Any favorite riding spots you all hit up regularly?

I usually ride along the coast on sunny weekends. The handling in the curves is unmatched for me. Perfect for a laid-back Sunday ride! Have any of you done long trips on yours?

Long trips are great! I’ve taken mine on some 500-mile journeys. It can get tiring, but the experience is worth it. It connects you to the road in a unique way.

Sometimes I feel these bikes are treated as ‘classics’ too early. Comparing performance and handling with modern standards can be misleading. But I still love mine!

True! Just need to appreciate them for what they are. Plus, the smiles per miles are hard to beat! Anyone else feel like this bike has a personality?

For sure! I often joke that my 850 has more personality than I do. It has its quirks, but that’s what makes it special. Stay safe out there, everyone!

I’ve been riding my 1980 Yamaha 850 Special for years, and regular oil changes are crucial. It keeps the engine happy and running smooth.

Absolutely! I also recommend checking the carburetors regularly. They can get gummed up if not maintained properly.

Has anyone experienced electrical issues with their 850 Special? Sometimes my lights flicker. It’s so frustrating!

Oh yeah, I’ve had that too! It might be a loose connection, check your wiring. Those old connectors can be tricky.

I found that replacing the battery with a quality one improved my electrical issues significantly. Worth a try!

Riding it is such a joy. Every time I twist the throttle, I feel like I’m in a retro movie!
