Need Help with My 1990 Yamaha XT 600 Restoration!

I’ve recently acquired a 1990 Yamaha XT 600 and I’m super excited about diving into a restoration project. I know these bikes have a pretty loyal following, and I’m hoping to tap into that for some tips and advice. Here are a few areas I could use some guidance on:

Condition and Assessment

  • Initial Inspection: What should I specifically look for when assessing the condition? Are there common issues with this model that might not be immediately obvious?
  • Essential Components: Any crucial parts I should check or replace immediately?

Parts & Availability

  • Original vs Aftermarket: Should I stick to original parts, or are there reputable aftermarket options that you recommend?
  • Where to Buy: Any trusted suppliers or online stores that specialize in parts for the 1990 XT 600?

Restoration Tips

  • Preferred Methods: What restoration methods have you guys found effective? Are there any specific techniques or tools that are particularly handy?
  • Maintenance Practices: Once restored, what are the top maintenance practices to keep this bike running smoothly?

Community & Resources

  • Forums or Groups: Are there specific forums or online communities dedicated to the Yamaha XT series where I can ask for advice and share my progress?
  • Documentation: Any manuals or guides you recommend for this specific model?

I appreciate any advice you all can provide! Looking forward to hearing from fellow XT enthusiasts. Thanks in advance!

I’m currently restoring a 1990 Yamaha XT 600 as well! For maintenance, I highly recommend checking your oil every 2,000 miles and the air filters regularly. Keeping everything clean really helps!

That’s awesome, john94! It’s such a fun project. Have you done any major repairs yet?

Definitely keep an eye on the fuel system too. The carburetor can get clogged if it sits for too long. A good cleaning can make a world of difference!

Great point! I had to rebuild my carb after letting it sit for a winter, which was a painful lesson learned.

Sourcing parts can be tricky! I’ve found that eBay and the XT 600 forums are goldmines for hard-to-find pieces. Anyone else have good sources?

I agree! I’ve had luck at local bike swaps too. Sometimes you find exactly what you need!

Maintenance schedule should definitely include chain lubrication every 500 miles and a brake inspection every 1,000. You want to make sure it’s safe to ride!

If you’re new to DIY maintenance, don’t be afraid to ask questions. There’s a learning curve, but it’s super rewarding to do it yourself!

Really true! I learned so much from forums like this one. We’ve got your back!

Is it really necessary to change the coolant every year? I was told to do that to keep it in optimal condition but it hasn’t been a problem yet.

Yes, definitely! Old coolant can lead to corrosion, which is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Was there ever a chance of getting a translation for the owner’s manual? The original is almost incomprehensible!

LOL! I feel you—some manuals make it feel like you’re deciphering ancient text! YouTube to the rescue!

Overall, restoring these old bikes is a great way to appreciate their history. Just remember to have patience; it pays off in the end!

I recently restored a 1991 XT 600, and I highly recommend checking out aftermarket exhaust systems. They can greatly improve performance and sound. Brands like Akrapovic and FMF are popular!

That’s great advice! How much weight did you save with the new exhaust?

For suspension improvements, I found the Racetech fork upgrade kit to be a game changer. It really enhances handling both on and off the road.

Sounds interesting! Did it affect the ride height or comfort much?
