Need Help with Ford G1 Paint Code - Shadow Black vs Absolute Black?

I’ve been diving into the world of Ford paint codes, specifically the Ford G1 paint code, and I’m hoping to get some advice from the community.

What I Know

I understand that the G1 paint code pertains to two shades: Shadow Black and Absolute Black. From what I’ve gathered:

  • Shadow Black seems to have a deeper, richer hue, which gives an elegant look to vehicles.
  • Absolute Black looks more like a standard black but has its own unique sheen.

My Questions

  1. How do I tell the difference between the two? I’ve seen pictures online, but they vary so much that it’s hard to tell the true colors. Is there a specific way to identify or compare them?
  2. Where can I buy the paint? I’m thinking of doing some touch-ups on my Ford and want to make sure I get the right shade. Any recommendations for reliable suppliers?
  3. Application Tips: If I’m planning to do touch-up work, what’s the best method to ensure a seamless blend with the existing paint?
  4. Customization: For those who have used these colors for customization or restoration projects, what’s your experience? Did you encounter any challenges?

Additional Thoughts

I’m really passionate about car maintenance and restoration, and I want my Ford to look its best. If anyone’s got personal experiences, tips, or even success stories with the G1 paint code, I’d love to hear them!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can share!

To find the Ford G1 paint code, check inside the driver’s door jam or on the vin plate. Some models also have it in the trunk area.

That’s a great tip! I found mine near the spare tire compartment. It can be tricky!

Also, don’t forget to check the owner’s manual! It usually has the specific location for your model.

Totally! I overlooked that at first. Manuals can be lifesavers for this info.

Just to clarify, Shadow Black is often referred to as G1, but it can be confused with Absolute Black since both look similar in low light.

I’ve seen many people mix up the two! Shadow Black has a slight metallic sheen in sunlight—definitely a distinguishing factor.

Exactly! Lighting conditions can really affect how the colors appear, especially on a rainy day.

Has anyone tried using the color identification apps? They’ve been pretty helpful for me in distinguishing similar shades.

I haven’t, but it sounds like a cool idea! I’m curious which apps work best for automotive colors.

I prefer to stick with the paint code to avoid any guesswork. Apps can be handy but sometimes misinterpret shades.

I agree with jamie26. The paint code is the most reliable way to ensure you get the right paint for touch-ups.

Indeed, you can’t go wrong with the actual code. Just wish they made it easier to find sometimes!

I used to think all blacks were the same until I had to touch up my car! Turns out they’re not! :joy:

Haha, hey, learning the hard way keeps things interesting, right?

I’ve been trying to figure out the differences between Shadow Black and Absolute Black myself! Has anyone found a reliable paint supplier that can match the Ford G1 code?

Check out Auto Paint Pro. They have a good track record with Ford colors and can mix custom batches. I got my paint from them and it matched perfectly!

If you’re looking for finishes, I recommend going for a clear coat on top of any black to give it that deep shine. Has anyone else tried this?

Absolutely! A clear coat can make such a difference. I went with a matte finish last time, but I’m considering gloss for my next project.

I think Shadow Black has a deeper tone compared to Absolute Black. But it ultimately comes down to personal preference! What finish do you usually go for?
