Looking for Tips on Frame Mount Side Steps Installation!

I’m planning to install frame mount side steps on my truck and I could really use some advice from those who have experience with them.

What to Expect

From my research, I found that these side steps can greatly improve accessibility for getting in and out of taller vehicles, especially for everyone in my family. However, I have a few concerns and questions:

  • Installation Process: How difficult is the installation? Any tools that I should definitely have on hand?
  • Types of Side Steps: I’ve come across a few different styles and brands. What’s the difference between them, and do you have any recommendations?
  • Durability and Weight Capacity: Are there specific brands that you trust for durability? I don’t want to invest in something that can’t handle regular use.
  • Common Issues: Did you run into any installation issues that I should look out for? Any tips for avoiding mistakes?

What I’m Using

I have an [insert vehicle make and model here] and I primarily want to use the side steps for daily driving along with occasional off-road adventures.

Installing frame mount side steps can be quite the task! First, ensure you have the right tools: a ratchet set, socket wrench, and a torque wrench are essential. Also, double-check the brackets and hardware included with your steps.

Absolutely! And don’t forget gloves to keep your hands clean. A clean workspace can really help with the process too!

Best tip: Always read the instruction manual provided with the side steps. Each vehicle might have different requirements, and minor oversights can lead to big issues later.

So true! I once skipped reading for another project, and it took me double the time because I had to redo steps. Lesson learned!

Having a second pair of hands can really help. When aligning the side steps, it’s much easier with someone else to hold it in place while you fasten the bolts.

Exactly! When I installed mine, I had a friend help, and we knocked it out in no time. Teamwork really makes the dream work!

Don’t rush the installation! Measure twice and tighten once. Over-tightening can strip threads or crack the frame. Take your time, and you’ll avoid common mistakes!

Totally agree with you. I used to be so impatient. Now, I take my time and have learned to enjoy the process.

What kind of vehicle are you planning to install the steps on? Some models actually have better mount points than others!

I’m working on a 2020 Ford F-150. Any specific tips for that model?

For the F-150, you might want to check for any existing mounting points on the frame. It’s typically straightforward, but sometimes there’s excess material that needs trimming.

That’s good advice! A friend’s F-150 had some hidden areas that made it easy to mount directly without drilling.

One humorous thing: last time, I accidentally stepped on my side step before installation! Let’s just say, it wasn’t very sturdy at that point.

I’ve had great success with aluminum frame mount side steps. They are lightweight and resist rust very well! Just wash them occasionally to keep them looking new.

Aluminum is definitely a solid choice! But how do they hold up in extreme cold? I’m curious about the durability in snowy conditions.

I’ve used steel side steps and they are super durable! However, they can rust if not treated properly. Just a heads up!

Steel sounds strong! But do you have any rust-proofing tips? I’m pretty paranoid about corrosion.

I suggest using a rust-resistant coating. I’ve had good luck with spray-on protectants that can withstand harsh weather!

Plastic side steps are an alternative too! They’re very lightweight but may not be as durable as steel or aluminum. Still, they don’t rust!
