Looking for Tips on Ford Straight Six Performance Parts

Seeking Advice on Performance Parts for Ford Straight Six Engines

I’m diving into a project with my Ford straight six, and I’m on the lookout for some solid performance parts. I’ve got a 1970 model and I’m trying to squeeze out a bit more power without breaking the bank!

What I’ve Got So Far

  • Engine Type: Inline Six (66-91)
  • Current Setup: Mostly stock with a few minor upgrades

What I Need Help With

I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with these engines! Specifically, I’m looking for recommendations on:

  • Intake and Exhaust Headers: Any particular brands that worked well for you?
  • Carburetors: I’ve heard some aftermarket ones can really boost performance; any suggestions?
  • Ignition Systems: Upgrading here seems like a good idea, but what’s the best route?
  • Performance Camshafts: Worth the investment?

General Thoughts

I know these engines can be a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to performance tuning, but it feels overwhelming with so much information out there. Also, if anyone has tips on tuning or modifications that are known to really bring out the best from these engines, I’d love to hear about those too!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and advice!

I’ve had great success upgrading the intake manifold on my Ford straight six. A Holley carb really opened up airflow and improved throttle response. Highly recommend it!

That’s awesome! I’m thinking about a header upgrade too. Any particular brands you would suggest?

I’ve used Clifford Performance parts for my exhaust setup. Their headers make a noticeable difference in power and sound. Plus, they fit like a glove!

I second the Clifford Performance suggestion! Their options are solid for performance upgrades.

It’s crucial to keep balance in the exhaust system though. A larger system can sometimes lead to back pressure issues. Has anyone else faced this?

Good point! I experienced that with a 2.5-inch exhaust and had to revert to 2.25 inches for better performance.

I’ve been thinking about dual exhaust setups. Anyone here done it on a straight six? How did it affect the torque?

I tried a dual exhaust on mine, and while it sounded amazing, I didn’t see much additional torque. Just a good rumble!

Supporting all these great ideas! Anyone also considering tuning after these upgrades? I’m curious how much difference that could make.

Tuning is definitely a game changer! I used an EFI setup post-upgrade, and the difference was night and day for drivability and efficiency! Well worth the investment.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that straight sixes deserve a little more love in the performance community? They can surprise you!

Hey everyone! I’m looking to tune my Ford straight six engine for better performance. Any suggestions on good aftermarket chips?

I’ve had great luck with Hypertech chips. They really optimize the fuel mapping for a noticeable power boost!

Don’t forget about adjusting your carburetor! It can make a significant difference in how your engine runs, especially with tuning.

[@julie38] Absolutely agree! A leaner fuel mixture can give you more power, but be careful not to go too lean or you could damage your engine.

What are some best practices for adjusting the air-fuel mix without risking damage?

Start with small adjustments to the mixture screw. It’s all about incremental changes—monitoring your spark plugs afterward can provide valuable feedback.

You might also want to consider getting a wideband O2 sensor to help with tuning and fuel mapping. It can really dial in your setup!
