Looking for tips on 1955 Ford F100 grill replacements!

Seeking advice on the grille for my 1955 Ford F100

I’ve recently taken on a project to restore a classic 1955 Ford F100, and I’m currently focusing on the grille. I want to make sure I get the right replacement or possibly consider some modifications to really make it pop.

What I’m Looking For:

  1. Replacement Parts:

    • Are there any reliable suppliers you guys recommend for OEM or aftermarket grilles?
    • How do the prices compare, and is it worth going for a higher-end option?
  2. Restoration Options:

    • Has anyone tried restoring an original grille? What were the challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
    • Any success stories or tips on products that really worked for you?
  3. Aftermarket Modifications:

    • I’m also considering some custom options to give the truck a more unique look. Any suggestions on styles or brands?
    • What modifications have you seen that work well without compromising the truck’s vintage appeal?

Additional Help:

  • I’d love to see some images of how others have tackled their grill issues. If you have before-and-after pictures, please share!
  • Also, if you have tips on installation or specifications to keep in mind during the process, that could really help me out.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide! Looking forward to your responses and suggestions!

I recently replaced my 1955 F100 grill, and I went for an aftermarket option. They often come with better materials and are more affordable than OEM ones. Just make sure you read reviews before buying!

That’s great advice! I’m leaning towards OEM myself, as I want to keep it as close to original as possible. But I’m curious, what aftermarket brand did you use?

I totally get that sentiment, jonathansimmons. OEM parts can be pricey, but they have that authentic feel. Has anyone considered materials like stainless steel? They last longer and don’t rust!

Stainless steel sounds interesting! I don’t want to compromise on quality. I’ve seen some reports about aluminum grills being prone to bending, though.

You bring up a good point, ashleylopez. While aluminum is lighter, it may not hold up under stress like steel does. I’ve heard some folks even modify their old grills instead of buying new ones. Has anyone tried that?

I think modifying can be a fun challenge if you have the skills. But for me, I’d rather buy a replacement than risk damaging my classic truck.

Support for both sides here! Whether you’re restoring or replacing, it’s vital to choose what feels right for you. I’m also looking into options, and I’m quite fond of the classic chrome finish.

Classic chrome is timeless! But it needs maintenance to keep it looking good—any tips on upkeep once I replace the grill?

Good question, patriciahardy! Regular washing and a protective wax every few months can do wonders for chrome durability. Just avoid abrasive cleaners!

Interesting! I never thought about that. Does anyone here think using a clear coat is worth it for added protection?

Absolutely, ehaney! A clear coat can help preserve the finish, but make sure it’s compatible with chrome. Some folks have issues with clarity after applying it, so research is key.

I’m currently working on my '55 F100 grill and found that adding LED lights can really modernize the look. Have you thought about integrating any lighting features?

Absolutely! I’ve seen some cool designs where people incorporate halo lights. It really makes the grill stand out at night!

Just make sure to wire them properly so you don’t run into battery issues. A custom wiring harness can help with that.

That’s a good point! I want my grill to be eye-catching but functional. Having a well-managed wiring setup will definitely go a long way.

Anyone tried different paint jobs on their grill? I’ve been experimenting with matte finishes versus gloss, and the matte look is really growing on me!

Matte looks sleek on classic rides! Did you use a specific brand that holds up well outdoors?

I used Rust-Oleum for the matte finish. It’s been durable, plus easy to apply. Just make sure to prep the surface properly!
