Looking for SBC 350 Top End Kit to Hit 400hp - Any Recommendations?

I’ve been diving into the world of performance tuning, and I’m specifically focused on squeezing out 400 horsepower from my SBC 350 engine. I’m considering a top end kit, but with so many options out there, I’m unsure which route to take. If anyone has experience or recommendations, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

What I’m Looking For:

  • Top End Kit Options: What kits do you suggest for reaching or exceeding 400hp? I’ve heard of a few, but I want to gather more opinions.
  • Budget Considerations: I’m trying to keep my build budget-friendly. Are there good quality parts that won’t break the bank?
  • Expert Advice: Any tips on modifications that complement the top end kit? What else should I be considering during this build?

Current Setup:

  • Engine: SBC 350, currently stock
  • Goals: 400hp performance with optimal reliability

Questions:

  1. Are there specific brands that are known for quality in these kits?
  2. What kind of gains have you witnessed with certain kits?
  3. Any considerations I should keep in mind, like reliability or necessary additional modifications?

Thanks in advance for all your help! I’m eager to get this project rolling and appreciate any insights you can share.

For hitting 400hp with an SBC 350, you definitely need high-performance heads. Consider the aluminum Edelbrock Performer RPM heads; they flow well and offer great value. Don’t forget to match them with a good intake manifold like the Holley Strip Dominator.

Totally agree! I’ve also found that a Holley 750 cfm carburetor works wonders with that setup. It really helps in getting those extra ponies you need.

Edelbrock AVS2 carburetors are fantastic too! They offer great drivability and performance, especially when mated with an RPM intake and good headers. What are your thoughts on using a dual-plane intake?

Not a bad idea, but if you want to maximize power, a single-plane intake like the Holley Strip Dominator is the way to go. It’s a bit more optimized for high RPMs.

Have you considered your cam choice? A more aggressive cam can really help you hit that horsepower goal. Something in the range of .480 to .510 lift works well with those components!

Absolutely! I’ve seen great results with a COMP Cams Xtreme Energy series camshaft. It pairs exceptionally well with aluminum heads and high flow intakes. It’s all about balance!

Can we talk about headers? Opt for long-tube headers for better exhaust flow. They play a significant role in maximizing performance. Anyone have specific brands they recommend?

You can’t go wrong with Hooker headers! They are known for their quality and performance. Just make sure they fit well with your setup to avoid any clearance issues.

So much great info in this thread! What about ignition systems? A good HEI distributor can really help you get the most out of your setup.

Agreed! An upgraded HEI system can provide better spark and timing control. Look for one with a higher RPM rating for increased performance.

What if I want to keep my setup budget-friendly? Are there any cost-effective options that can still help me reach 400hp without breaking the bank?

You can always check out used parts or rebuilds. A good second-hand set of heads can save you a lot without sacrificing too much on performance.

Don’t forget the importance of tuning! Once you have your components, a good tune can unlock the horsepower you’re chasing. Anyone have tuning experiences they’d like to share?

Tuning is key! I remember when I first tuned my engine; it was like night and day. It’s all about fine-tuning the fuel and timing to get everything to work in harmony.

If you’re looking to make 400hp with an SBC 350, I recommend a top end kit that includes good aluminum heads, a performance cam, and a decent intake manifold. Make sure to check the compatibility with your current setup!

Great advice! What specific brands do you recommend for the heads and cam?

When installing the top end kit, make sure to have a torque wrench, gasket scraper, and a good set of sockets. Always check the clearance on those new heads to avoid any surprises!

Excellent point, tsmith! How do you recommend handling the intake manifold installation? Any tricks?

I’ve had success with the Fel-Pro gaskets for the intake. Make sure to align everything properly and use silicone on the corners for a better seal. Don’t forget to torque in proper sequence too!
