Looking for Insights on the 2003 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic

Introduction

I’m considering purchasing a 2003 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and I’d love to get some feedback from the community. I’ve seen a few listings online, but I want to make sure I make a well-informed decision.

Purchase Considerations

  1. Pricing: What should I expect to pay for a well-maintained 2003 Ultra Classic?
  2. Reliability: How does the engine hold up over time? I’ve heard mixed reviews about older Harley models, so any insights would be helpful.
  3. Inspecting Before Buying: What specific issues should I look out for when I see one in person?

Maintenance Questions

  • I know that maintenance is key for a motorcycle like this. What are some routine maintenance tasks I should be aware of?
  • Is the sputtering problem that some of these units experience common? How can I troubleshoot it if it occurs?

Comparison and Specs

I’m also curious about how the 2003 model differs from the newer models or even from special editions like the Anniversary edition. What are the key differences in performance or features?

Conclusion

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! I’m excited about possibly joining the Harley community and would like to make sure I get the best bike for my needs. Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve had my 2003 Ultra Classic for several years, and I can say the engine power is impressive. The 88 cubic inches really delivers a smooth ride, especially on the highways.

Absolutely! I took mine through some mountain roads last summer, and the handling was surprisingly good, considering its size.

The Ultra Classic really shines on long trips. I’ve made some modifications like upgrading the suspension, and it has made a world of difference in both comfort and performance.

I’ve been happy with mine too! What kind of suspension upgrades did you do, vanessa46? I’m considering some modifications myself.

I switched to progressive shocks, and they really help with absorbing bumps, especially on rough terrain.

In terms of performance, I’ve added a high-flow air filter, and it really made a noticeable difference in power response. Highly recommend it!

That’s interesting, mitchellkenneth! I never thought about modifying the air filter. Has anyone tried a different exhaust system? I hear that can also enhance the sound and power.

I’ve got a Vance & Hines system on mine, and the sound is fantastic! It also helped with throttle response. Just keep in mind it can get loud for long rides.

Good to know! I love a bike with attitude, but I also want to enjoy the ride without fatigue. What do you think about the seat comfort?

The seat on the 2003 Ultra Classic is pretty comfy for long distances, but I did end up adding a seat pad for extra cushioning.

Interesting! I’ve been considering that modification too, sherry35. Overall, how does everyone feel about the bike’s performance in rain or wet conditions?

I find the handling remains stable in wet conditions. Just make sure to adjust your riding style and keep an eye on the road. Safety first!

Agreed, dcampbell! I always approach wet pavement with caution. It’s heavy, but it feels secure enough once you get used to it.

Absolutely! Speaking of safety, what’s the general consensus on the braking system? Is it responsive enough?

The brakes could be better—I’ve had to upgrade my front brake pads for a bit more bite. They feel a bit soft stock, especially when loaded.

That’s good advice, reynoldsdonna! A little humor here, but if the brakes aren’t strong enough, don’t take your mother-in-law for a ride! :joy:

Lol, true! But in all seriousness, I’ve enjoyed this discussion. The 2003 Harley really does have its quirks, but they can be managed with the right upgrades.

I’ve owned a 2003 Ultra Classic for several years now, and the seat is incredibly comfortable for long rides. It’s cushioned well and has excellent lumbar support, which really helps on those extended trips.

I totally agree! The riding posture is great too; it’s relaxed enough to handle all-day rides without fatigue.
