Looking for Good Shocks for My F150 – Suggestions?

I’m in the market for some new shocks for my Ford F-150 and would love to get some advice and recommendations! I’ve been hearing a lot about the importance of shocks when it comes to ride quality and performance, especially since I use my truck both on and off the road.

What I Need:

  • Compatibility: My F-150 is a 2018 model, so I’m looking for shocks that match this year and understand there are OEM and aftermarket options available.
  • Performance: I’m looking for something that enhances both comfort and handling, as I often find myself driving on rougher terrains.
  • Pricing: It’s important that I consider my budget but also want to ensure I’m not sacrificing quality for a lower price.

Some Brands I’ve Heard About:

  • Bilstein: They seem popular, especially for off-road performance. Are they worth it?
  • Fox Racing Shox: I’ve heard great things, particularly for those who do a lot of off-roading. Any experiences?
  • Rancho: Seems to be a solid choice, but I wonder how they compare to others mentioned.

Questions:

  1. Which brands have you found work best for your F-150, and why?
  2. Any specific models that you would recommend?
  3. Is it worth going for premium shocks, or do budget-friendly options do the job just as well?

I appreciate any insights you all can share. Thank you!

I’m looking into shocks for my F150 too! I’ve heard monotube shocks offer better performance because they have a larger oil capacity, which can enhance ride quality on rough terrains. Anyone tried them?

[quote=“garyboyer, post:1, topic:7198”]I’ve heard monotube shocks offer better performance…[quote/]Actually, I’ve installed twin-tube shocks on my F150, and they provide a smooth ride for daily driving. They may not be as responsive as monotubes, but they’re definitely more budget-friendly!

Twin-tube shocks are great for a comfortable ride around town but might not perform as well in off-road situations. If you’re going off-roading often, you might want to look at monotube shocks for better performance.

Adjustable shocks can be really beneficial! They let you customize the ride quality depending on your needs, whether you want comfort or performance. They do tend to be pricier though.

I’ve had good experiences with Fox adjustable shocks. They really do improve handling and feel. Just make sure to consider the weight of your load if you’re towing frequently!

It can vary, but expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 for installation, depending on the shop. It might be worth it to DIY if you’re handy!

I appreciate all these insights! I’m torn between monotube and adjustable. Does anyone know how much the install usually runs for these types?

[quote=“kevinrich, post:8, topic:7198”]Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 for installation…[quote/]Good to know! Has anyone experienced any issues with adjustable shocks after some heavy use? I want to make a wise choice this time.

I haven’t faced issues, but maintenance is key! Make sure to check the components regularly to prevent wear and tear, especially if you’re off-roading often.

It’s all about finding a balance! Do you prioritize highway comfort, off-road capability, or towing performance? Each shock type has its strengths.

I am leaning towards comfort since I mostly drive on highways. Any twin-tube model recommendations that don’t break the bank?

Rancho RS5000s are excellent twin-tube shocks that provide a great balance between comfort and performance without breaking the bank!

[quote=“fsummers, post:13, topic:7198”]Rancho RS5000s are excellent twin-tube shocks…[quote/]Those look good for my needs! Will those improve handling as well, or are they strictly for comfort?

They definitely improve handling as well! They’re versatile for daily driving and light off-roading. Just don’t expect race-level performance.

Honestly, even the stock shocks on the F150 can be decent if you’re not too hard on them. But upgrading could really enhance your experience!

I’m looking into Bilstein 5100s for my F150. They’ve got great reviews for both on and off-road use. Installation is pretty straightforward if you have a decent toolkit.

Bilstein is great, but have you checked their compatibility with your specific model year? You don’t want to run into fits issues later on.

I recommend Fox shocks; they are robust and work well for modified trucks. The install can be a bit tricky, just make sure to have a buddy to help hold things in place.
