What's the Best Engine Oil for a Toyota RAV4?

I’m looking for some help regarding the engine oil for my Toyota RAV4. I’ve done a bit of research, but I’m still feeling confused about a few things. Here are my burning questions:

Viscosity Grades

  • What oil viscosity do you recommend?
  • I’ve seen 0W-20 and 5W-20 mentioned a lot, but which one is actually best for my RAV4?

Oil Types

  • Are synthetic oils really worth the extra cost? What are the main differences between conventional and synthetic oil?
  • Can I mix different types of oil if I run out of one?

Maintenance Tips

  • How often should I change the oil based on my driving habits?
  • Any tips for DIY oil change if I decide to go that route?

Owner’s Manual Confusion

  • The owner’s manual has conflicting information. How do I interpret it correctly?

Your experiences, recommendations, and any resources you’ve found helpful would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I’m a fan of synthetic oils for my RAV4. They provide better protection and performance in extreme temperatures compared to conventional oils.

I agree! I’ve used synthetic for my '19 RAV4 and it runs like a dream. Plus, the oil changes are longer intervals, which is a bonus!

What about viscosity ratings? I’ve seen 0W-20 recommended for newer models. Is that the best choice?

Yes, for most recent RAV4 models, 0W-20 is typically ideal. It’s perfect for fuel efficiency and engine longevity!

I used conventional oil for my 2008 RAV4, and it worked fine, but I switched to synthetic and noticed better overall performance!

I’ve heard that certain high-mileage synthetics can help with older RAV4s. Any thoughts on that?

Yes, high-mileage oils can help maintain seals and reduce leaks in older engines!

I love the lively debates here! But seriously, everyone should consider their driving conditions when choosing oil.

True! I mostly drive in the city, so I’m sticking with synthetic for my trips. No need to change that!

I think it depends on what you value more: price or performance. What’s everyone’s priority?

Personally, I value performance! That’s why I’m happy to pay a little extra for synthetic oil. It definitely pays off in the long run.

Can’t argue with that! But hey, if conventional works for some, let them enjoy it, right?

So after all this, is it just me, or should we all be switching to full synthetic? RAV4 lovers unite!

I just changed my oil in my RAV4 last week! I used 0W-20 synthetic oil which my dealer recommended. Super smooth!

That’s awesome! What tools do you recommend for a DIY oil change?

You definitely need a socket wrench, an oil filter wrench, and a torque wrench. Don’t forget the oil catch pan too!

And make sure to have gloves! The oil can be really messy otherwise.

Absolutely! I also recommend using a funnel to avoid spills when pouring in the new oil. It saves cleanup time!
