What Wheels Work Best for a 1966 Ford Mustang?

Introduction

I’m currently in the process of restoring my 1966 Ford Mustang and I’ve hit a bit of a roadblock when it comes to selecting the right wheels. I want to make sure that I choose the best options for both aesthetics and performance.

Wheel Types and Sizes

I’ve noticed that there are so many different styles and sizes available, which makes the decision a bit overwhelming. I am particularly interested in the following points:

  • What wheel size is ideal for a 1966 Mustang?
  • Are there specific wheel brands that are recommended?
  • How can I ensure compatibility with my current tires?

Upgrades and Performance

Additionally, I’ve heard that upgrading to larger wheels can improve handling and ride quality. Would it be worth it to go for a slightly larger size, say 15" or 16"?

  • What should I be aware of in terms of performance changes when upgrading wheels?
  • Are there any drawbacks with larger wheels on classic cars?

Aesthetic Considerations

I also want to keep my Mustang looking classic but can’t decide on a style.

  • What designs are popular for 1966 Mustangs that blend classic and modern aesthetics?
  • Any painting or finishing tips for preserving a clean look?

Ask for Recommendations

I would greatly appreciate any insights or personal experiences you may have regarding choosing wheels for a 1966 Ford Mustang. Any recommendations on specific sizes, types, or brands would be incredibly helpful!

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Choosing wheels for a 1966 Mustang really depends on your driving style. Going for 15-inch wheels with a classic look can enhance performance while keeping the vintage charm.

Absolutely! I also think the material matters. Aluminum wheels are lighter and can improve speed, especially if you’re taking it to the track.

Don’t forget about the style! Classic five-spoke wheels give the car a timeless look. I can’t get enough of those!

I love that style too, but what do you think about wider wheels for better grip? I’m considering 17s for my project!

Wider wheels can definitely improve handling, but be cautious of fender clearance. You might need to roll the fenders slightly.

I heard that some people prefer a staggered setup. Would that be beneficial for a classic Mustang?

Staggered setups can improve handling, but it’s a delicate balance. You might risk uneven tire wear if not done right.

That’s such a good point! Plus, you need to consider the price. Some wheels can get really pricey!

Totally! I found some great options online for around $100-150 each, which are not too bad.

Performance and aesthetics can sometimes clash. Make sure you pick a design that looks good but can also take a beating if you’re planning on spirited driving.

Honestly, how can you not pick something that makes your Mustang shine? I mean, it’s a Mustang!

Very true! What about color? Should we go classic or something a bit more bold?

I think it depends on your overall theme. A black Mustang with shiny chrome wheels always looks striking!

That’s classic indeed! Can’t wait to see everyone’s setups once all the wheels are on!

For a 1966 Mustang, the standard bolt pattern is 5x4.5 inches. Make sure the wheels you choose match this to avoid fitment issues.

Great info, but also consider the offset! Most Mustangs need a +0 to +6 mm offset for a flush fitment.

I prefer a more aggressive look, so I went with a +10 mm offset. It required minor fender rolling, but it was worth it for the stance!

Just a heads up, if you go too aggressive with the offset, you might end up rubbing on the suspension. Always measure twice, guys!

Very true! I had to adjust my springs to avoid that issue. Also, keep an eye on the tires.
