What Size Exhaust Nuts Do I Need for My Harley?

Looking for Harley Exhaust Nut Size Information

I’ve recently started some maintenance work on my Harley and am trying to replace the exhaust system. As I was getting into the disassembly process, I realized I need to know the exact size of the exhaust nuts I need to purchase. I want to ensure I’m getting the right fit and preventing any issues when reassembling.

What I Need Help With:

  • Exact Measurements: Can anyone provide the specific size of the exhaust nuts for different Harley models?
  • Compatibility: Are there different sizes for different models or years? I own a 2015 Harley Davidson Street Glide.
  • Torque Specifications: If anyone knows the torque specs for these nuts after installation, that would be super helpful too.
  • Sources: Where is the best place to buy these nuts, either online or in-store?

Additional Thoughts:

I’ve seen a few options out there, but I want to make sure I get it right the first time to avoid any leaks or other issues with the exhaust after installation. Also, any tips on the installation process would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! Looking forward to your insights on this!

To accurately measure the exhaust nuts, I recommend using a caliper. Just make sure to measure the diameter across the flat sides. Different Harley models may require different sizes, so check your manual too!

Great tip! Does anyone know if all Sportsters use the same size nuts, or do they vary by year?

It’s a good idea to consult your service manual as well. They usually have the specifications for exhaust nuts listed. I found it extremely helpful for my Softail.

Thanks for that info! I never thought to check my manual. I’ll look it up right away!

I work with an experienced mechanic, and he always says, “Measure twice, buy once!” So definitely double-check your measurements before purchasing new nuts.

Sounds like solid advice, martin! Just curious, what specific Harley model do you own? Sometimes it really helps to share model info.

I have a 2010 Dyna Low Rider and the exhaust nut sizes were tricky to find. You should check Harley’s parts website; it has all the details.

That’s a smart move! I guess I should check that site before heading to the shop.

If you’re still unsure, you might consider bringing the old nuts to the store. That way, you can match them up right there.

I love that idea, john! It’s like the ‘Bring-a-nut’ shopping strategy haha. Seriously though, it could save time.

Haha, right? But just be careful you don’t walk out with any shiny new parts you didn’t need!

Also, if you can, just ask the mechanic directly if you’re feeling overwhelmed. They can offer insights from years of experience.

That’s a smart approach! It’s always good to support local mechanics too!

I’ve been working on my Harley for years, and I can tell you that it’s always best to err on the side of caution with sizes. The last thing you want is a stripped nut!

Absolutely! I once had a nut strip on my ride, and it was a nightmare! Lesson learned.

For my older model, I just ordered the OEM parts from the dealership. Sometimes it’s worth it to invest a little extra for the right fit.

That’s true, brandon! OEM parts might be pricier, but they often save you trouble in the long run. Better safe than sorry!

I’m looking for specific sizes for exhaust nuts on my 2015 Harley. I’ve had issues with stripping them after multiple removals. Any recommendations?

I had a similar issue with 2014 models. I found that a 5/16’’ bolt size worked well. Don’t forget to use anti-seize compound to prevent galling!
