What Paint Should I Use for My Enclosed Trailer Floor?

I’m looking for advice on painting the floor of my enclosed trailer and could really use some tips from those who’ve been through this process. Any recommendations for the type of paint that is durable and can handle the wear and tear that comes from loading and unloading vehicles?

Considerations Before Painting

  • Durability: Since this trailer will be used for transporting vehicles, I want a paint that won’t chip or peel easily.
  • Non-Slip Properties: It can get slippery, especially when wet, so I’m considering adding some non-slip elements. Has anyone successfully combined a non-slip additive with a floor paint?
  • Preparation: I’m curious about the prep work involved. How should I clean and prepare the floor before painting?
  • Finish Options: Should I go with a gloss or matte finish for the best results?

Specific Products

If you’ve had good experiences with specific brands or products, I’d love to hear about them. Additionally, any tips on the application process—brush vs. roller vs. sprayer? And how long does it generally take to cure?

Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to your insights.

I’m considering painting my enclosed trailer floor as well. I’ve heard that epoxy paint provides excellent durability and is resistant to chemicals. Anyone have experience with that?

Epoxy is definitely the way to go! It’s tough and resists wear and tear. Just make sure to prep the surface properly for the best adhesion.

I painted my trailer with Rust-Oleum’s floor coating. It holds up really well! Just watch out for slipping if you don’t add some traction elements.

Good point! Adding traction can save you a trip to the ER. I did that with a non-slip additive, and it made a huge difference.

What about the ease of application? I’ve heard some paints can be tricky to work with.

The epoxy paints usually require mixing, but once you get the hang of it, they’re straightforward. Just follow the instructions closely!

I used a latex floor paint for my trailer. It’s easy to apply and dries fast, but I wonder how long it will hold up.

Latex is great for quick jobs, but it might not endure heavy loads as well as epoxy. Keep that in mind!

Has anyone tried oil-based paints? I’m curious if they are any good for trailer floors.

Oil-based can be durable, but they take longer to dry and can be a real chore to clean up. Not really a fan!

I’m thinking of even adding some color to my floor. Is there any specific paint that’s recommended for aesthetics and durability?

You might want to check out Sherwin-Williams’ industrial coatings. They have some great options!

The cost can also be a factor! I want something durable but not break the bank.

Right? I tried to find a balance too. I went for a mid-range epoxy that seemed to have good reviews without being overpriced.

I honestly just used whatever was available at the local store. It worked fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for durability.

Preparing the floor is key! Start by thoroughly cleaning it with a degreaser and water to remove any dirt and grime. Make sure it’s completely dry before you do anything else.

What about priming? Is it really necessary, or can I skip it?

Priming is essential, especially if you’re using a paint designed for metal. It helps the paint adhere better and improves durability. I recommend an epoxy primer for the best results!

Great tip! What about repairs? Do I need to fix any rust spots?
