What Oil Type for 2016 Ram 1500? Need Help!

I recently bought a 2016 Ram 1500 and want to make sure I’m using the right oil type for my engine. From what I’ve read, there are different recommendations depending on whether you have the HEMI or EcoDiesel engine. Can anyone break down what the manufacturer suggests and whether there’s any debate about which oil grades work best?

Key Points of Interest:

  • Manufacturer’s Recommendation: What does the owner’s manual say about the oil type?
  • HEMI vs. EcoDiesel: Is there a significant difference in oil requirements?
  • Oil Grades: What grades of oil are considered optimal for performance and longevity?
  • User Experiences: Any tips or experiences dealing with different oil types? Did you notice a difference in the engine’s performance?

Additional Considerations:

  • Oil Change Frequency: How often should I change the oil?
  • Synthetic vs. Conventional: Is it worth it to go with synthetic oil?

I’d love to hear everyone’s recommendations and experiences. Thanks in advance for your help!

For a 2016 Ram 1500, it’s generally recommended to use 5W-20 full synthetic oil. It helps with better fuel economy and protects the engine under various conditions.

I totally agree! I switched to synthetic a year ago, and my truck runs smoother than ever!

While many prefer synthetic oil, conventional oils can still work fine if changed regularly. It really depends on your driving habits.

That’s a good point! I’ve always used synthetic, but I wonder if I should try conventional some time.

I love Mobil 1 for synthetic or Pennzoil for conventional. Both have great reviews among Ram owners!

I’ve been using Valvoline and have had no issues at all. My Ram’s engine feels as strong as ever!

Supportive here! Whatever oil you choose, make sure it has the API certification. That keeps your engine running well!

API certification indicates the oil meets specific performance criteria set forth by the American Petroleum Institute. For extreme temperatures, 0W-20 might be a better choice!

What is API certification? I haven’t heard of it before! Any other insights on oil grades for extreme temperatures?

Absolutely! The longer intervals between changes can balance out the cost over time.

You guys, I once mistakenly put in 10W-40 because I was in a rush. Never again! My engine sounded like a blender!

That’s hilarious but so nerve-wracking! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Is there a consensus on how often to change the oil? My manual says every 7,500 miles, but I’ve heard conflicting opinions.

It can depend on your oil type and driving conditions. Some suggest every 5,000 to be safe, especially if you tow a lot.

I guess it all comes down to balancing protection and cost. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

I use synthetic oil for sure! It’s a bit pricier but worth it for engine longevity. Plus, I usually change it every 7,500 miles. Just my experience, but it seems to keep the truck in great shape.

Wow, yes! Even if mileage is low, oil can break down over time, especially in short trips that don’t allow the engine to heat up fully. I’d recommend changing it soon! Better safe than sorry.

I’ll second that! My mechanic always says, ‘A clean engine is a happy engine!’ Kind of cheesy but it rings true. Keeping on top of maintenance is key!

Makes sense! How often do you guys take your trucks in for a routine check-up besides oil changes?
