What are the Right License Plate Screw Sizes?

I’ve been looking into replacing the screws for my license plates, but I’m not quite sure what sizes I should be using. It seems like many vehicles might have different requirements. Are there standard sizes for license plate screws?

I’ve seen some threads mentioning various sizes depending on the vehicle model, and I would really appreciate any advice from fellow car enthusiasts about this. Here are a few questions I have:

  1. What sizes do most standard license plate screws come in?
  2. Are there different screw types (like stainless steel vs. plastic) that I should be considering?
  3. Do some vehicles require special screws or mounting hardware?
  4. Where is the best place to buy these screws, either in-store or online?

If anyone could share their experiences or any resources they found helpful regarding license plate screw sizes and options, that would be amazing! I’m looking to get this sorted soon, so your expertise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!

When it comes to license plate screws, most vehicles use 1/4" - 20 screws in the imperial system, and for metric, M6 screws are quite standard. It’s always good to check your vehicle manual for specifics though.

That’s super helpful, Donald! I’ve dealt with a few different sizes before, but I never knew M6 was the metric standard. Thanks for the info!

It’s interesting how many sizes are out there. My old Toyota used M5 screws, which I found surprising! It pays to double-check.

Exactly, Robert! Not just Toyota, some Hondas use weird sizes too. I’ve seen M5 and M6 interchangeably, it’s confusing sometimes!

I had to replace my license plate screws and went with M6. Be aware some states require different lengths for visibility. It’s good to check local regulations as well.

That’s a great point, Randy! I often forget about those regulations. Does anyone know if different states have specific lengths for plate screws?

Here in California, you’re mostly safe with standard sizes, but it wouldn’t hurt to verify with the DMV if you’re unsure. It’s better to be cautious.

I just measured mine and found they’re actually a bit rusted! I guess it’s time for an upgrade. Any recommendations for screw brands?

Honestly, I’ve had luck with stainless steel screws for longevity—they don’t rust as easily. Definitely worth considering!

I got mine at AutoZone! They have a variety of sizes and materials. Plus, it’s always a fun outing to check out car stuff!

Nice! I love car parts shopping. It’s like a candy store for adults! Who knew license plate screws could inspire such excitement?

I’ve found that stainless steel screws are the most durable option for license plates. They resist rust and handle various weather conditions well.

True! But don’t overlook plastic screws. They’re lightweight and won’t rust, making them suitable for those in really wet climates.

I prefer chrome screws for aesthetics, but I’ve had issues with them rusting over time. Stainless steel might be the better choice for longevity.

Absolutely! While chrome looks great, it can definitely lose its shine. But if you’re in a dry area, they might hold up decently.

Has anyone tried titanium plate screws? They seem stronger and are resistant to corrosion, but I’ve heard they can be pricey.

I’ve never used titanium, but I’ve read they outperform stainless in certain conditions! Would love to hear if anyone has experiences to share.

I’m all for plastic screws! They don’t rust at all, which is perfect for me since I live near the ocean. Just make sure they’re a good quality.
