Need help with my 2012 Chevy Cruze exhaust system!

Hey folks,
I’m having some issues with the exhaust system on my 2012 Chevy Cruze, and I’m hoping to get some advice from those who might have more experience.

What’s Going On?

Recently, I’ve noticed that my Cruze has been making some strange noises, and I suspect it might be related to the exhaust. It sounds like there’s a rattling or hissing sound coming from underneath the car, particularly when I accelerate. I’m not sure if it’s a loose heat shield, a leak, or something else.

What I’ve Checked So Far

  • Visual Inspection: I’ve crawled underneath and checked for any visible damage or loose parts, but I didn’t see anything obvious.
  • Listen for Leaks: I tried the old ‘listen for the hissing’ technique, but it’s hard to pinpoint it.
  • Exhaust Smell: No weird smells inside the car, so I’m hoping it’s not a serious issue.

What Should I Do?

I’d appreciate any tips on:

  • Troubleshooting: What are some common causes of exhaust noises in the Cruze?
  • Repairs: Should I tackle this myself or is it better to take it to a shop?
  • Replacement Parts: If I need to replace something, are there any specific parts or brands I should look at?

Any Modifications?

Also, I’ve been toying with the idea of upgrading my exhaust system for better performance. If anyone has experience with aftermarket exhaust systems for the 2012 Cruze, I’d love to hear your recommendations! Are there any brands that you trust?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I recommend checking out Borla’s exhaust systems for your 2012 Cruze. They offer good performance gains and have a solid reputation for quality.

I’ve heard a lot about MagnaFlow too! They are known for creating a deep sound and can improve performance significantly.

I personally prefer stainless steel for exhaust upgrades. It’s durable and won’t rust easily compared to other materials.

Great point! Stainless steel does have a longer lifespan. Just make sure whichever brand you choose offers it.

Has anyone tried the Flowmaster exhaust? I hear it’s good for enhancing the sound quality without sacrificing too much performance.

Flowmaster is solid! I had one on my previous car, and the sound was incredible. Just keep in mind the drone at highway speeds.

For performance gains, you might see around 10-15 hp depending on the setup and other mods you have.

That sounds awesome! What kind of mods are you suggesting alongside the exhaust?

Don’t forget a good tune can also maximize the gains from your exhaust upgrade! Definitely worth considering.

Tuning makes a big difference! But make sure to consult a professional to avoid any issues with your car’s computer.

What’s your budget for this upgrade? There are options at every price point, from budget to high-end.

I’m looking to spend around $500. I want to make sure I get quality without breaking the bank.

For that budget, I’d say check out the options from Borla or MagnaFlow. They have nice systems that fit well and sound great!

Just make sure to read reviews. Sometimes a system might look great but underperform in real-world conditions.

Isn’t it funny how an exhaust upgrade can make a four-banger sound like a muscle car? Gotta love the magic of aftermarket parts!

So true! No one would expect my Cruze to sound that good. It’s like turning a mouse into a lion!

I’ve had issues with my 2012 Cruze’s exhaust system too. Pay special attention to any strange noises; they often indicate a problem. A loose heat shield can cause rattling, while a failing muffler can sound like a loud rumble.

Definitely inspect for any exhaust leaks at the joints. Even a small crack can cause the check engine light to come on. A smoke test can help identify leaks.

If your check engine light is on, have the codes read. It could be related to the O2 sensors or catalytic converter, which are common problems for this model.
