Need Help Choosing Running Boards for My Ford Raptor!

I’ve recently picked up a Ford Raptor and I’m looking to add some running boards to it, but I’m not sure where to start. I’m hoping to get some insights and advice from fellow Raptor owners or anyone knowledgeable about running boards. Here are a few questions I have:

Installation

  • What’s the installation process like for running boards? Are there specific tools I need, or can it be done with basic hand tools?
  • How long does the installation usually take? Is it a DIY job or best left to the professionals?

Modifications and Options

  • Are there specific brands that you recommend or ones to steer clear of?
  • I’m looking for something that not only looks good but is also durable and functional. Any suggestions?

Aesthetic Choices

  • How do the running boards influence the overall look of the Raptor? Should I go for a sleek style or something more rugged?
  • Do they affect the ground clearance or overall performance of the truck?

Where to Buy

  • Are there any particular places or websites that offer good deals on running boards?
  • Any tips for spotting quality products versus the cheaper ones?

I appreciate any advice or experiences you can share. Thanks in advance!

I’m considering running boards too! I’ve read that aluminum options are lighter and rust-resistant while steel ones are more durable. What’s everyone else’s experience?

I have a set of steel running boards on my Raptor, and they’ve held up great! A bit heavier, but worth it for the strength.

Don’t forget about plastic running boards! They can be more budget-friendly and still look good. Just make sure they are UV-resistant.

Absolutely! Although I’m more into the fixed designs. Anyone tried retractable ones? How do they hold up?

Retractable boards are cool for that sleek look, but I’ve heard they can malfunction. I prefer fixed ones for reliability.

I have fixed boards from Westin and love them! They blend well with the Raptor’s aggressive styling. What brands are you all leaning toward?

Westin is a solid choice! I’m eyeing some from Rampage; anyone tried those?

Rampage makes great products! I had them on my last truck, very sturdy. But I think you can’t beat the look of aluminum running boards.

I find aluminum a bit too flashy for the Raptor vibe. Steel gives it a more rugged feel!

I agree with yharris! Steel definitely adds that tough, off-road look. Plus, they usually have better grip for muddy trails!

Really? I thought grip was better on rubberized aluminum! But I haven’t tried steel yet. Anyone else feel that way?

You’re right, rubberized finishes can help with grip. But I still think a textured steel surface outperforms it off-road.

Just goes to show, there’s no one-size-fits-all here! No matter what, just make sure whatever you choose fits your lifestyle!

I’ve been through the installation of running boards on my Raptor. You’ll need a socket set, wrenches, and a drill. Make sure to follow the instructions closely; a second pair of hands helps a lot! Good luck!

Great advice! Can you tell us what brand of running boards you installed and any specific challenges you faced?

I installed the Amp Research ones. The hardest part was figuring out where the mounting brackets went. Definitely check for existing holes to make the process smoother!

Did you have to drill any new holes, or did it all line up with existing ones?

I didn’t have to drill any new holes; just used the existing ones. Make sure to use anti-corrosion spray on the bolts to prevent rust. It saved me a headache later!

That’s a fantastic tip! I’m definitely keeping that in mind. Any other tools that were particularly useful during your install?
