GMC Door Handle Unlock Button Not Working - Seeking Help!

Problem Overview

I’ve been having some trouble with my GMC recently. The unlock button on the door handle has stopped working, and it’s becoming a hassle. Instead of smoothly unlocking the door as it used to, I often find myself struggling, especially when my hands are full.

Troubleshooting Steps Tried

I’ve already attempted a couple of things to troubleshoot the problem, including:

  • Battery Check: I replaced the battery in my key fob since I thought it might just need a fresh one. Unfortunately, it didn’t solve the issue.
  • Key Fob Reset: I tried resetting the key fob by following the instructions in my owner’s manual, but still no luck.
  • Physical Inspection: I looked at the door handle and the wiring to see if something appeared loose or damaged. Everything looked fine at a glance.

Community Help Needed

I’m reaching out to see if anyone else has experienced this issue or knows a workaround. Is there some common malfunction related to the door handle unlock buttons on GMC vehicles? Or any expert tips to troubleshoot this issue further?

Additional Information

  • Model: 2016 GMC Terrain
  • Symptoms: The unlock button does not respond when pressed, although the lock works fine.

I really appreciate any advice or suggestions! Thank you in advance for your help!

I’ve had the same issue with my GMC! It turned out to be a simple electrical problem with the wiring in the door handle. Check for loose connections first.

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t checked the wiring yet. Could it also be related to the key fob?

Definitely! Key fob batteries can cause issues. If the fob is weak, the unlock signal may not reach the car.

That’s a good point. How do I know if it’s just the battery?

You can try unlocking with a spare key fob. If it works, then it’s likely just the battery in the first one. Battery replacement is easy too!

In my case, it was a mechanical failure. The button inside the handle was stuck. I had to disassemble it to fix the issue.

Wow, that sounds like a pain! Was it difficult to take apart?

Not too bad! Just a few screws and a little patience. But definitely be careful with the plastic clips.

I think checking the door handle mechanism is a must. I had a friend whose handle broke completely due to wear.

That’s true. If it breaks, it can lead to more expenses. I’m tempted to just break out the duct tape!

Haha! Duct tape can fix anything! But seriously, you might need professional help.

I’d recommend taking it to a mechanic if you’re not comfortable with disassembly. Better safe than sorry!

Has anyone looked into the software issues? Sometimes, a reset can solve electrical problems.

Interesting thought! How do you reset the system on a GMC?

Usually, you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the electronics. Just make sure you have your radio code if needed!

These door handle issues are tricky! I wonder if it’s something they should address in recalls for certain models.

It would be great if they did! But, isn’t that rare for vehicle mechanical failures?

Have you checked the battery in your key fob? Sometimes a simple battery replacement can solve the issue with the unlock button not working.

I had the same problem! Replacing the battery fixed my key fob immediately. Give it a try!
