Anyone successfully done a Road King to FXR conversion?

Seeking Guidance on Road King FXR Conversion

I’ve been toying around with the idea of converting my Harley-Davidson Road King into more of an FXR style bike and wanted to reach out for some advice from the community. I’m particularly interested in:

  • Modifications Needed: What are the essential changes in terms of aesthetics and performance? Are there specific parts that can help achieve that FXR look?
  • Product Recommendations: Are there any particular kits or components you found useful for this kind of conversion? I’m looking for quality parts, but also considering the cost.
  • Challenges and Solutions: What were some hurdles you faced during your conversion, and how did you overcome them? I’d love to learn from your experiences.
  • Resources: If you have links to detailed guides or videos on the topic, please share! It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any insights or personal stories you have. This is a big project for me, and I want to make sure it’s done right. Cheers!

I’m really interested in this conversion! I’ve heard the frame swap requires quite a bit of work. What are the essential parts needed for a Road King to FXR conversion?

You’ll need a new FXR frame, a different fuel tank, and a few other parts like footpegs and a new seat. The wiring can be tricky, too!

I did the swap last year! Expect some challenges with the electrical connections—those can get messy. However, it was worth it in the end for that FXR look!

I agree! I spent a whole weekend figuring out the wiring. Make sure you have a good diagram handy.

What tools did you find essential for this conversion? I want to make sure I have everything before starting my build.

You’ll need basic hand tools, a lift, and maybe a torque wrench. A good buddy always helps too!

Did anyone encounter issues with the rear wheel alignment after the conversion? I heard that can sometimes be a problem.

Yeah, rear wheel alignment can be tricky. If you’re not careful, you might end up with a bike that handles like a drunk giraffe. Take your time with it!

Haha! That made me laugh! I hope my build doesn’t turn out that way!

Remember to be patient with yourself during this process. It’s not just about the outcome but the journey too. Good luck!

I’ve done the conversion from Road King to FXR, and it was quite a journey! The engine modifications are essential for that extra torque and performance. I swapped in a cam and bigger injectors. Totally worth it!

That sounds awesome, rachel49! Did you notice any significant differences in handling after the suspension upgrades?

Yes, performance greatly improved! I upgraded to adjustable shocks and the ride is much more stable now. It’s thrilling to take corners at speed! Just be careful with the stock frame limitations.

Thrilling, indeed! But is it still comfortable for long rides? I enjoy tours on my Road King.

Definitely! With the right adjustments to the seat and risers, comfort is maintained. It’s a blend of performance and rideability. Just be sure to keep the weight distribution in mind when upgrading!

I am curious about the legality of some engine mods. Have any of you faced issues with inspections after your conversions?

So far, no troubles! I made sure to keep my modifications within legal limits. It’s always good to check the local regulations before going all out on performance upgrades.

That’s smart! But do you find yourself needing to retune for different riding conditions?

For sure! Seasonal tuning helps, especially when you switch between city and highway riding. I’ve also swapped out some exhaust components for better flow, and it helps with the engine’s responsiveness.
