I’ve had my 1986 Ford Ranger Diesel for over 10 years. The performance is pretty solid for a truck of its age. I usually get around 25-30 mpg, which is impressive compared to modern trucks.

That’s great to hear! I’m curious, have you experienced any major issues? I heard the fuel system can be a problem in these models.

While I haven’t had issues with my fuel system, I did have to replace the glow plugs a couple of years ago. The mechanic mentioned it’s a common maintenance task for these trucks.

Sounds like the glow plugs are indeed a frequent issue. I’ve heard the engine’s longevity makes up for the occasional maintenance hiccup. How long has your engine lasted?

I’ve got over 200,000 miles on mine, and it still runs like a champ! Just regular oil changes and some TLC here and there.

Amazing! That’s impressive longevity. Are parts readily available for maintenance, or is sourcing them a hassle?

I’ve had no issues finding parts at local stores and online. There’s a dedicated community for these trucks, which makes it easier.

Does anyone notice a difference in performance compared to the gasoline version? I’ve always been curious about that!

The diesel definitely has more torque, which is great for hauling! But the gasoline models tend to be a bit quicker off the line if you care about speed.

That makes sense! I’m excited about potentially getting a diesel. Any common issues I should be aware of?

Be prepared for some rust if you live in a wet climate. I had to deal with some corrosion on mine. Regular check-ups are a must.

Rust? That’s a downer! Maybe I should name my future truck Rusty… haha. But seriously, are there any serious reliability issues?

Overall, I find them quite reliable if maintained well. Just pay close attention to the oil and cooling systems.

Good to know! I’m considering one for my daily commute, but I worry about repairs if something goes wrong.

Repairs can stack up if you let issues linger, but as long as you stay on top of maintenance, they’re pretty manageable.

That’s reassuring! It sounds like as long as I’m proactive, it could be a worthwhile investment.

I’m glad to see a thread on the '86 Ranger Diesel! I’ve been considering turbocharging mine to boost power. Anyone have experience with specific kits that fit well?

Turbocharging is a great idea! I’ve seen significant gains with a proper kit. Just make sure to upgrade your fuel system to handle the extra air.

Suspension upgrades can really change the handling of these trucks. I went with a 4-inch lift and it made off-roading a blast!
