Anyone have tips on running boards for Chevy trucks?

I’m looking for some advice on running boards for my Chevy Silverado, and I could really use your help! I’ve been doing some research, but it’s a bit overwhelming with so many options out there. Here are a few things that I’m considering:

Styles and Designs

I’m not sure if I want the traditional flat ones or something more aggressive looking. I’ve seen a few that are more tubular in shape, and they look great but might not be as practical. What styles have you all gone with?

Compatibility and Fitment

I own a 2021 Silverado and want to ensure that whatever I buy will fit perfectly without modifications. Has anyone had any issues with fitment in the past?

Pricing and Budget

I’ve found options ranging from around $150 to over $600. Is there a sweet spot where you can get quality without breaking the bank? Recommendations would be appreciated!

Personal Experiences

If you’ve installed any running boards, I’d love to hear about your experience! Did you encounter any installation problems? Are there brands you’ve loved or hated?

I’m hoping to enhance the overall look of my truck while also making it easier to get in and out, especially since I sometimes have to help my parents in and out of the truck. Any suggestions or recommendations would be super helpful! Thanks in advance for your input!

Hey! When it comes to running boards for Chevy trucks, there are three main types: fixed, retractable, and electric. Fixed boards are great for consistent access, while retractable ones offer flexibility. Electric boards are super convenient but can be pricier. It all depends on what you need and your budget.

I totally agree! I have fixed boards and I love how sturdy they are. They’re always there when I need them, no fuss at all!

That’s a good point, anna73! Fixed boards do provide a solid feeling. But I find retractable boards pretty handy if you’re looking for aesthetics or occasionally need the extra space without sacrificing function.

Just curious, what’s the installation like for these types? Are fixed boards much easier to install than the retractable or electric ones?

Yeah, installation can vary. Fixed boards are pretty straightforward, but retractable and electric can be more involved due to wiring. It’s best to consider a professional unless you’re comfortable with DIY.

Good to know! I might stick to fixed if I go that route. They seem reliable and less headache! What do you think, tmoore?

I’ve had both fixed and electric on different trucks. The electric ones are a luxury but if they fail, it’s a headache! So really, consider your needs before splurging.

I love the electric boards for convenience! But yeah, if you’re not up for maintenance, maybe fixed is the way to go. Plus, they often have a cleaner look.

Is there a significant weight difference between these options? I’m always worried about the durability for heavy-duty use.

Generally, yes! Fixed boards typically have a sturdier build, which is better for heavy-duty. Electric ones can vary based on the brand, though, so check the specs.

That’s really good to know! I just want to make sure everything holds up. Thanks for answering, everyone! Anyone else have input?

Installing running boards can be straightforward! Start by gathering tools: a socket set, a drill, and some wrenches. First, locate the mounting points and clean them well. Then, align the brackets and securely attach them. Finally, mount the running boards and double-check everything.

Great tips, iberger! I’d add that having a second person helps a lot during installation, especially when lining things up.

Don’t forget to periodically check the bolts after installation. They can loosen over time, and you don’t want a running board falling off mid-ride!

Totally agree! I had one come loose, and it was a hassle to fix on the highway.

I found that using an impact wrench speeds up the process significantly. Just be careful not to over-tighten the bolts. It can strip the threads.

Good to know, andrew38! I’m curious though, what specific tools do you think are essential?

Besides the impact wrench, a torque wrench is crucial to ensure you’re not overtightening. Also, I recommend a magnetic tray to hold the small hardware pieces. It saves so much time!

All great tips! Has anyone experienced any common installation issues they can share?
