Anyone else had issues with their 2006 Chevy Silverado headliner?

Seeking Help with My 2006 Chevy Silverado Headliner

I’m reaching out because I’m having some trouble with the headliner in my 2006 Chevy Silverado. Lately, I’ve noticed that it’s starting to sag and looks pretty worn out. I’m not sure if it’s worth trying to fix it myself or if I should just buy a replacement kit.

Experiences and Recommendations

I’d love to hear from others who have dealt with this issue before. Here are a few things I’m wondering:

  • DIY Repair or Replacement: Is it feasible to reattach the headliner myself? If so, what supplies will I need?
  • Replacement Kits: Are there any specific brands or types of headliner kits that you would recommend? I’ve seen some options on Amazon and other marketplaces, but it’s tough to determine the best quality.
  • Professional Help: For those who opted to have a professional do the work, how much did it cost, and were you satisfied with the results?

Additional Information

To give you a bit more context, the headliner fabric is starting to droop, and I can see some of the foam underneath peeling away. I’ve cleaned it a couple of times, but I think it’s time for a more permanent solution. I’ve also read that some people use spray adhesives, but I’m concerned that might make things worse.

If you have any tips, tricks, or product recommendations, please share! I’m looking to get this resolved soon and would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve had the same issue with my 2006 Silverado! The headliner started sagging after a few years. I found using a good contact adhesive helped a lot with the repairs.

That’s good to know, wrightchad! What type of contact adhesive did you use? I’ve heard 3M makes a strong one.

I used 3M Super 77, and it worked like a charm! Make sure to have a scraper and a roller to press it down for a smooth finish.

Thanks for the tips, hgomez! Have any of you tried replacing the entire headliner instead of just gluing it back? I’m wondering if that might give a better result.

I considered replacing mine entirely, osmith. It seems like a lot of work, but you can get a lot of different materials that look really nice! The fabric options are endless.

A full replacement might be overkill if you’re just fixing sagging, but if you want something fresh, it’s definitely worth it!

I recommend getting some spray adhesive for a more professional look and a clean finish. Just make sure to cover your seats to avoid any sticky situations!

Haha, jessicahenry, very true! I had a sticky disaster on mine the first time I tried to fix it. Lesson learned: always tape things off!

Are there specific brands you found to be better than others for spray adhesive?

I found Loctite to be quite reliable. Also, prep the surface well; it makes a huge difference in adhesion.

Good advice, hbyrd! I’ve also seen videos where they used a hairdryer to heat the fabric and make it more pliable. Have any of you tried that?

I tried that, melissa70, and it worked decent! Just be careful not to overheat it. A professional look is definitely achievable with some patience.

It’s amazing how little tweaks can help! I may give that a try this weekend!

It’s all about finding your rhythm. I used to rush this stuff, but now I take my time, and it always turns out better. Good luck, everyone!

I had issues with my headliner too! I replaced it with felt fabric, which looks great but I worry about its durability. Has anyone else tried other materials?

I went with a microfiber material! It’s stylish and holds up well. The only downside is that it can get a bit pricey.

I opted for vinyl. Super easy to clean and quite durable. Just remember, it can look a bit cheap if not installed well. Anyone else feel the same?

Totally agree, I had a bad vinyl install once and it looked awful. What about suede? It’s pretty luxurious but might be sensitive to wear.

Suede definitely adds a touch of elegance! But I’ve heard people say it stains easily with moisture. Any experience with that?
