I’m dealing with a pretty frustrating issue with my 4L60E transmission. It seems to be working fine in all forward gears, but I have no reverse at all. I’ve done some research, and it looks like this is a common problem, but I’m not sure where to start diagnosing it.
Symptoms
The transmission shifts smoothly in 1st, 2nd, and Drive.
When I shift into Reverse, the car just doesn’t move.
No weird noises or slipping in forward gears.
Things I’ve Tried
Checked the transmission fluid level; it looks good and has no burning smell.
Scanned for any error codes but nothing popped up.
Applied some new fluid as a flush but still no luck.
Questions
Has anyone experienced this? What could be the underlying cause?
Could it be a simple fix, or is it likely something serious?
Any recommendations for a reliable repair shop or tips for a DIY fix?
It would be great to hear from anyone who’s had a similar experience. I’m hoping to avoid a full rebuild if possible, especially since forward gears seem to be functioning properly. Appreciate any advice or input you can share!
It sounds like a classic 4L60E problem. Check your transmission fluid level first; low fluid can cause issues with reverse. If that’s fine, it might be band wear. You may want to get the vehicle to a shop for a full diagnostic.
Don’t overlook the solenoids. If they’re faulty, it can lead to a loss of reverse while allowing forward gears to function. An electrical issue might be at play here too!
Definitely check your fluid quality too. Old or burnt fluid can cause erratic shifting and might even explain your reverse issue. It’s a simple step, but highly crucial.
Going to throw in a question here: Have you scanned for any trouble codes? Sometimes, electronics can throw you off even more than mechanical issues, so it’d be good to rule that out.
I second the solenoid check! They’re responsible for gear engagement, and if one is malfunctioning, that could lead to losing reverse without affecting forward gears. Just don’t ignore them!
I once faced a similar issue and realized it was just a loose connector at the solenoid. Funny how something so small can throw a wrench in your plans! Check your connections first.
Just remember, it could also be a pump issue. If the pump isn’t providing adequate pressure, you might face reverse issues. Keep us posted on what you end up doing!
I know it sounds a bit silly, but have you tried yelling at it? Sometimes a good talk can do wonders! On a serious note, don’t stress, you’ll get to the bottom of this.
I recommend starting with checking the transmission fluid condition. Make sure it’s at the right level and looks clean. Dark, burnt fluid could indicate issues.
